Champions League 2026-27 draw: what the fixture computer handed each club

The Champions League 2026-27 league phase draw is done, and the fixture list is now fully loaded on our Champions League page: 36 clubs, 144 matches, eight matchdays running from 8 September 2026 to a simultaneous final round on 27 January 2027. Our model has priced all 18 matchday 1 fixtures, and this post is its first read of the competition — what the draw actually handed each club, and where the opening round’s real stories are.
Every number below comes from our 31 August model run (cl-elo-0.1.0) and will keep updating on the match pages until kickoff, so treat the prose as a snapshot and the links as the live source.
The shape of the league phase
Eight matchdays, and the calendar is not evenly spread:

Two structural facts matter for anyone reading the table later. First, matchdays 2 and 3 sit a week apart in October — a club that starts badly can be six points down before November. Second, the entire final matchday kicks off simultaneously, which is when the difference between 8th and 9th, or 24th and 25th, gets settled by goal difference in real time.
The deeper problem — that 36 clubs share one table while each plays only 8 of 35 possible opponents — is why this competition needs different machinery from a domestic league. We’ve written before about why comparing teams across leagues is hard; the league phase is that problem run as a live experiment.
The strongest call on the board is a 99
The model’s most extreme matchday 1 number is PSG vs Slovan Bratislava: 99% for the home win as of the 31 August run. A 99 is worth pausing on, because it is the kind of number dishonest sites round up to “guaranteed”. It isn’t. It is a claim that if this fixture were played a hundred times, Slovan Bratislava or the draw cash in about one of them — and one-in-a-hundred events happen every week somewhere in football. What a 99 mostly tells you is that the ratings gap between a continental champion and a qualifying-round survivor is the widest thing the league phase format can produce.
The chasing pack of favourites: Bayern vs Bodø/Glimt at 84%, Lille vs Real Betis at 82%, and Barcelona vs Feyenoord at 81%.
The boldest call is an away win
The model’s most aggressive matchday 1 opinion is not a home banker at all: it makes Arsenal 79% favourites away at Napoli. An away side at nearly four-in-five in a Champions League fixture between two title-winning clubs is the single strongest statement in the opening round — stronger, in its own way, than PSG’s 99, because home advantage usually compresses exactly this kind of number. If you want to know what the model believes about Arsenal’s current level, that one figure says more than any table.
One genuine coin flip, and it involves Porto
Porto vs Manchester City opens as the tightest fixture of the round: 42% City, 36% Porto, 22% the draw. No other matchday 1 game has the two win probabilities this close. Real Madrid vs Inter (61-19-19) and Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid (50-22-29) are the marquee ties, but the model sees clear favourites in both; the Estádio do Dragão is where it genuinely shrugs.
An honest caveat about ratings in September
A league-phase draw tempts everyone into “hardest schedule” rankings the day the balls come out. We’re not publishing one today, deliberately. Early-season continental ratings lean heavily on last season’s evidence, and eight of these clubs arrive through routes our dataset covers thinly. Schedule-difficulty numbers are at their least reliable exactly when the draw makes them most shareable — we’d rather show you 18 priced fixtures now and rate schedules once the phase has produced real results to calibrate against.
