The most common complaint about a football prediction model is that it does not react. Manchester United lost 2-0 at newly-promoted Hull City on the opening weekend and our 26 August model run still prices Manchester United vs Ipswich Town at 58.8% United, 22.4% draw, 18.8% Ipswich for Sunday at Old Trafford. If you want to know how much one result changes a football prediction model, this fixture is a clean worked example — and the answer is a specific, calculable number rather than a shrug.

The ceiling on a single Elo update

Our secondary signal is a football-adjusted Elo ledger with a K factor of 20 and a goal-margin multiplier: 1.0 for a one-goal margin, 1.5 for two, and rising above that for three or more. United lost by two, so the multiplier is 1.5 and the largest possible rating swing from that match is 20 × 1.5 = 30 points. That is the ceiling, reached only if the model had been certain United would win; the actual movement was smaller, because some of the defeat was already priced.

Thirty Elo points is easy to translate. Against an evenly-matched opponent, a team that drops 30 points sees its win expectancy fall from 50.0% to 45.7% — about four and a third percentage points. That is the entire mechanical effect of the worst single result Manchester United could plausibly have produced on matchday 1, and it is far smaller than the narrative around the fixture would suggest.

The goals model moves even less

The primary model is a Dixon-Coles fit over the full scoreline record, and it is deliberately harder to move than the Elo book. Our Premier League fit is trained on every completed match in our database for the competition — 1,910 as of the 26 August run, going back to 2021 — with older matches down-weighted by time decay so that recent form counts for more without recent form counting for everything.

Hull 2-0 United contributes one observation to that fit. United’s attack parameter sits at 0.106 and its defence parameter at 0.055 in the 26 August ratings: a side that scores modestly above league average and concedes modestly below it. One two-goal defeat nudges both. It does not rewrite either, and a model that let it would be a model that thought last Saturday was worth more than the four seasons preceding it.

Put the two together and you get Sunday’s 58.8%. Not a defence of Manchester United — an artefact of how much evidence a single match is.

Where this reasoning is genuinely vulnerable

Here is the part worth being honest about, because the same arithmetic that protects a model from overreaction is what makes it slow when something real has changed.

Our model has exactly one channel for information: goals scored and conceded, by team, over time. If the Hull defeat was variance — a corner, a header, a second half of pressure that ESPN’s report describes as United camping in the Hull half without seriously testing the goalkeeper — then the model’s stability is correct and the market’s reaction would be the error. If instead the defeat reflected something structural, the model will need weeks of results to notice, because a structural change reaches it only in the form of more bad scorelines.

That is not a hedge; it is the specific failure mode of this class of model, and it applies symmetrically to Sunday’s visitors. Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2-1 on the opening weekend through a Jack Clarke winner in the 90th minute, as Goal’s preview recaps. Three points, one goal of margin, one Elo multiplier of 1.0 — the smallest update the ledger produces for a win. A promoted club that starts the season well will be under-rated by our numbers for longer than most readers would find comfortable.

What the model has not read at all

Neither signal reads team news. Goal’s preview lists Jack Taylor out with a knee problem and Azor Matusiwa unavailable for Ipswich, with Florentino Luis a fitness doubt, and reports no fresh concerns for Manchester United, with Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha the central attacking threats.

None of that is inside the 58.8%. If you think two midfield absences matter for a side already the underdog by forty points of probability, that is an adjustment you are making on top of our number, not one we have made for you — and we would rather say that plainly than let a probability imply a squad analysis it never performed.

The version that matters is the one at kick-off

The figures in this post are frozen to the 26 August run, and the fixture is four days away. The match page re-renders at every build, so by Sunday morning it will be showing whatever the model believes then, not this. Every current Premier League price sits on the league page, and how these calls have actually scored once settled belongs on the track record rather than in a preview that cannot be checked.

One shock defeat is worth about four percentage points of win expectancy and one observation in a 1,910-match fit. Old Trafford on Sunday is where that claim gets its second test.
